She wanted to listen to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Opus 35. Would Asiye Hanım learn how to put a record on the gramophone? Next time, she should teach her how. As she took one step, an excruciating pain grabbed her in the belly and she collapsed on her knees.

“Madam!”

She was suddenly bathed in cold sweat.

“You’ve gone all white. I’m calling Aziz Bey.”

Asiye Hanım dashed out of the drawing room. Alex pushed away Pepa and Goya, who had run to her in panic and were licking her hands and face. What was happening? God, what’s happening to me? She pressed her hands to her belly. She had to keep her baby! She wrapped her arms around her and folded in half. I must not move. I must stay put. I must hold on to my baby. I shall not let her go! She started stroking her belly. “Stay with me! Please don’t leave me. Please. Please don’t go.”
